Meet Roberta Masters-Cullen
Many of you said, "I want to meet the people running things in our community." So, I’ll be sharing some of the incredible faces I’m meeting from time to time— meet Roberta Masters-Cullen: 👇
Background:
👋: Roberta started her journey in theater and news reporting, but a fateful move to Alexandria set the stage for what would become a decades-long commitment to children’s creativity. She’s taught at the Burgundy Farm, and local city schools. Eventually, Roberta founded Alexandria Children’s Theatre (ACT), giving kids a chance to perform, explore movement, and develop confidence through drama. Today, ACT offers year-round programs and summer camps that are in high-demand, often selling out immediately.
Insight:
💡: “Parents often think of sports as the go-to for exercise,” she said, “but acting is just as physical, and it connects the mind and body in ways that build lasting neurological pathways.” It’s not just about being on stage. It’s about helping kids become better communicators, problem-solvers, and citizens.
Food for thought:
🧠: In one recent class, 36 students, many of them scholarship recipients and new to acting, put on a version of Alice in Wonderland. “Some didn’t speak English. But by the end, they were on stage, performing together,” she said. “They beamed with pride.”
